Ottawa Rapid FC Fall 3-0 to AFC Toronto on the Road

Jazmine Wilkinson makes her Rapid debut in 81st minute

Toronto, ON (July 10, 2025) – Ottawa Rapid FC returned from the international break with high energy but couldn’t find their rhythm in a 3–0 loss to AFC Toronto at York Lions Stadium in Toronto on Thursday night. A quick brace from AFC’s Kaylee Hunter put the hosts on the back foot early, and despite holding 61% possession in the first half, the Rapid struggled to generate clear chances in the final third. Melanie Forbes had a goal called offside, but nothing would fall for the visitors before the break.

The Rapid came out more composed in the second half, showing glimpses of their trademark grit and press. However, an opportunistic third goal from Toronto sealed the result, and Ottawa couldn’t claw their way back. 

"I do think it was a tale of two halves for us. We went into the locker room unhappy with our first-half performance. But we’re a team that believes in who we are as Ottawa Rapid and in the quality we have throughout the squad,” said captain Desiree Scott. “The message at halftime was simple: we still had a whole half to play. Being down 2-0 is a tough spot, but we believe in our fight and our grit – that's part of our blueprint as a team. I think you saw that in the second half. We came out with bite, won more 50-50 balls, got stuck into tackles, and pressed higher. We created a lot more, but unfortunately, we just couldn’t get the job done."

Head coach Katrine Pedersen: “We talked about it at halftime, and both players and coaches agreed – that first half wasn’t who we are. We weren’t on the same page, and we weren’t doing the right things. A few individual mistakes led to us being down 2–0, and we knew we were capable of better. So we addressed a few tactical adjustments, but more than anything, it was about our mindset. We believed there was enough time to get back into the game, and we went into the second half with that energy and I think that showed. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the goal we needed, and when we shifted to a more aggressive setup to chase the game, Toronto capitalized and scored again. That’s part of the risk you take.”

Next, Ottawa Rapid FC are at McMahon Stadium in Calgary to face Calgary Wild FC on Saturday, July 19 at 4 p.m. ET.

Toronto, ON (10 juillet 2025) – De retour de la pause internationale avec beaucoup d’énergie, Le CF Rapide Ottawa n’a toutefois pas trouvé son rythme et s’est incliné 3-0 contre l’AFC Toronto jeudi soir au Stade York Lions. Un doublé rapide de Kaylee Hunter a rapidement donné l’avantage aux locales. Malgré 61 % de possession en première demie, le Rapide a peiné à se créer de véritables occasions dans le dernier tiers. Un but de Melanie Forbes a été refusé pour hors-jeu, et rien n’est tombé en faveur des visiteuses avant la pause.

Le Rapide est revenu sur le terrain avec plus de sang-froid en deuxième demie, démontrant par moments son intensité habituelle et une pression plus soutenue. Cependant, un troisième but opportuniste de Toronto a scellé l’issue de la rencontre. Ottawa n’a pas réussi à combler l’écart.

Desiree Scott, co-capitaine :
« On peut dire que ce match s’est vraiment joué en deux temps pour nous. À la mi-temps, on n’était pas satisfaites de notre performance. Mais on croit profondément en notre identité en tant qu’équipe et en la qualité de notre groupe. Le message était simple : il restait une demie à jouer. Tirer de l’arrière 2-0, c’est difficile, mais notre force mentale et notre combativité font partie de notre ADN. Je pense qu’on l’a bien vu en deuxième demie. On est sorties avec de l’intensité, on a gagné plus de duels, on s’est battues dans les contacts, on a pressé plus haut. On s’est créé davantage d’occasions, mais malheureusement, ça n’a pas suffi. »

Katrine Pedersen, entraîneuse-chef : « À la mi-temps, l’équipe technique ainsi que les joueuses ont souligné que la performance en première demie ne reflétait pas notre niveau habituel. On n’était pas sur la même longueur d’onde, et on ne faisait pas les bonnes choses. Quelques erreurs individuelles nous ont coûté cher. On savait qu’on était capables de mieux. On a ajusté quelques aspects tactiques, mais surtout, on a changé d’état d’esprit. On croyait encore pouvoir revenir dans le match, et ça s’est vu sur le terrain. Malheureusement, on n’a pas réussi à marquer. Et quand on a changé notre structure pour tenter de revenir, Toronto en a profité. C’est le risque qu’on prend. »
